If you look at enough About Me page examples, you'll see that they're tricky. Learning how to write an About Me page can be tricky.

A lot of people do them badly. But you're going to do it well! Because after this post, you'll know how to write an About Me page.

What is an About Me Page?

If we're going to talk about how to write an About Me page, then we should probably define what an About Me page is.

An About page is a special web page on a site where your readers/visitors learn more about you and what you do. This is not a contact us page. Writing this page isn’t the easiest thing to master, but it’s possible once you understand the essential elements that must be included.

A good About Me page does a few things:

  • It tells people what you do
  • It tells people how you can help them
  • It tells people why you're qualified to help them
  • It helps people get to know, like, and trust you by learning your personal story and seeing some photos of you
  • It gives people a chance to learn more by opting into your email list

We'll get into all of this below, so keep reading for more about how to write an About Me page.

Your About Me page is one of the most important pages on your blog.

Why?

Well, let's think about it. Your About Us page is usually one of the first pages people will read when they come to your site. It's their chance to learn more about you and what you do. So knowing how to write an About Us page is crucial.

And if they like what they read, they'll stick around. They might even subscribe to your email list so they can learn more about what you do. They might become customers.

But if your About Us page is…not so good…then people will leave. And that's not good for business!

That's why it's so important to make sure your About Me page is captivating, helpful, and tells people what you do and how you can help them. That's how to write an About Me page for a blog.

How to Write an About Me Page: What Should I Include in an About Me Page?

Knowing what to write in an About Us page can be tricky. But there are some elements that really should be in pretty much every About Us page. Let's talk about them…

  • At least one picture of yourself (if not more than one). Consider getting professional photos of you taken for this (and also to display on other parts of your website and on social media).
  • An introduction to who you are
  • An explanation of who you help and with what
  • An explanation of why you're qualified to do so
  • Your personal story, told through the lens of why you're the right person to help people with this problem
  • Your mission statement
  • An email opt-in form (or some other call-to-action)
  • (Optional) Some fun facts about yourself

How to Write an About Me Page: Things to consider before writing an About Me page + what to avoid

Let’s talk about some basic guidelines before we start talking about how to write an About Me page for a blog.

Who are your readers?

The about page is one of the most visited pages on a website, so it’s important that you know who your target reader is before you start writing.

Your about page should be written in a way that appeals to your target reader (or “Ideal Customer Avatar”).

It should be interesting and engaging, and it should make them want to stick around and learn more about you.

But more importantly, it really needs to speak directly to THEM. Don't think about it as if you're writing to a thousand people. Figure out your ICA and write directly to her.

What’s the purpose of your about page?

Before you start writing, it’s important to think about what the purpose of your about page is.

Are you trying to sell something? Are you trying to build your list? Are you trying to establish yourself as an expert in your field?

Your About Me page should have a clear purpose, and everything on the page should work towards that purpose.

What do you want people to do after they read your About Me page?

Do you want them to buy something from you? Subscribe to your email list? Follow you on social media?

Make sure you have a clear call-to-action (CTA) at the end of your About Me page, and make sure it’s relevant to the purpose of the page.

What value do you offer your audience?

Your About Us page should be about your audience, not about you. It should be focused on the value you offer to your readers, and how you can help them solve their problems.

People don’t care about you nearly as much as they care about themselves, so make sure your About Me page is all about them.

You're going to talk about yourself, of course. But do it through the lens of “how can I help my ICA”?

What is your site about?

Your About Me page should be relevant to the rest of your site. If your site is about fashion, your about page should be about fashion too.

If your site is about personal finance, your about page should be about personal finance too. You get the idea…

If your site is about gluten-free cooking, that's what your About Me page should focus on. Sure, you can throw in a few other fun details about yourself, but the main point has to be how can you help your ICA with their gluten issues.

Things to avoid

Now that we’ve talked about what you should include in your about me page, let’s talk about some things to avoid.

Don’t brag. Your readers don’t care how many awards you’ve won or how successful you are. They care about how you can help them solve their own problems.

Don’t be self-centered. This is not the place to tell people all about yourself and your accomplishments. The focus of your about page should be on your audience, not on you.

Don’t write a novel. Keep your About Me page short and sweet – around 500-600 words is ideal. That's how to write an About Me page the right way.

How to write an About Me page, step-by-step

Briefly introduce yourself

The first thing you should do on your About Me page is introduce yourself. This can be a sentence or two about who you are and what you do.

For example, “My name is Jane Smith and I’m a freelance writer.”

Or, “Hi, I’m John Doe and I help people start businesses.”

Or maybe a little more creative…but make sure that you really are introducing yourself if you really want to know how to write a great About Me page.

Identify your About Me page reader's pain points

Your first section (after the title of the page), should identify your reader’s pain points.

  • Why do people come to your blog?
  • What problems are they looking to solve?
  • What problems can you help them with?

Identify these things right upfront so that people will say “Wow, yeah, I do struggle with that!”

That’s the response you want.

You don’t need to list 20 things. Just a few is fine. Enough to show that you really “get” your reader.

Tell your reader what you do and how you can help them

Next up, you’re going to explain how you can help your reader.

  • Do you have blog posts that would help? Link to them.
  • Do you offer a course or an ebook that would help? Link to it.
  • Do you offer a service that would help? Link to it.

And don’t just leave bare links. Talk about it. Talk about all the stuff you can really do to help them solve whatever problem(s) it is they’re looking to solve.

Tell the story of your journey from where you started to where you are now as it relates to your blog topic

This is where you’re (finally) going to get to get personal and talk about yourself.

There’s a delicate balance here. You do not need to tell people your entire life story. They don’t need to know where you were born or where you went to high school or when you got your braces off.

But you do want to get somewhat personal. Tell your life story (briefly), but tell it in the context of your blog.

So, for an About Me page example, in my About Me page, I don’t tell them that I grew up in Detroit or that I went to the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) or that I have an insane cat named Bella or that my favorite candy is Junior Mints (they’re so good!).

But I do tell them the story of how I was traveling abroad in Ljubljana, Slovenia when I decided to start a travel blog while sitting in a gelato shop. And I talk about how that blog became successful. And then I talk about how it led me to the discovery that I am passionate about helping other bloggers build and grow their blogs. Which leads to the blog you’re reading right now.

You see the difference?

Now, it’s ok to show some personality here. So if you want to throw in a silly fact just to show some personality (like that my favorite candy is Junior Mints), that’s ok. You aren’t a robot. But that shouldn’t be the whole thing, it should just be a cute little aside.

The important part is still to show them why you are the person to help them.

Include details that give you authority and explain why you are qualified to help them with this problem

Here’s where you are going to tell people why you’re qualified to help them.

This could be some formal education that you have. It could be that you’ve been doing this for X number of years. It could be that you’ve helped X number of people with this topic.

Whatever it is, talk about it.

Explain why people should listen to you.

Include at least one photo (if not more)

Photos are a great way to help people connect with you.

Including at least one photo is a must.

But feel free to include more than that, especially if they are relevant to your topic.

Make sure they are high-quality photos and that they look good on the page.

You can also use videos, infographics, or other visuals to break up the text and add some interest.

But photos are a great place to start.

Side note: I highly recommend taking the time to invest in a professional branding photo shoot. They're not as expensive as you might think, and it can really take things up a notch.

Include your mission statement

A mission statement is basically a tagline that sums up what you do, who you serve, and why you do it.

It’s a great way to finish off your About Me page and leave your reader with a clear understanding of what it is you do and why you do it.

Include an email opt-in and some CTAs

Your About Me page is a great place to include a call to action (“CTA”). You can ask people to do something like check out your products or join your Facebook group.

But the most obvious one is an email opt-in. Explain what value they’ll get by signing up and then include an opt-in form.

You’ll get some subscribers.

Optional: Include some testimonials

If you have testimonials from happy customers, this is a great place to include them.

It can help build trust with your readers.

But make sure they are high-quality and look good on the page.

And don't go crazy with it. You don't need to list every kind word anyone has ever said to you.

But a few well-placed testimonials can be very effective, and it's something I do on my own About Me Page example.

End with a call to action

Finally, end with a call to action.

Tell people what you want them to do now that they’ve read your About Me page.

Do you want them to join your email list? Follow you on social media? Check out your products?

Whatever it is, tell them and make it clear.

How to write an About Me page: Tips for writing an About Me page

Your about me page is about your reader, not just you

The biggest and most common mistake I see on About Me pages on blogs are people just talking about their own life history.

That’s not how to write an about me page.

Yes, there is one section where you will give some personal info (more on that below), but that’s not what it’s all about.

It’s about the reader. You’ve got to remember that when talking about how to write an About Me page.

You need to tell the reader who you are, how you can help them, and why you’re qualified to help them.

People aren’t clicking on your About Me page because they randomly wonder where you went to high school. They want to know who you are, but in their own context. They want to know how you can help them and why they should listen to you.

As you can see in the About Me page template below, a lot of the page is dedicated to talking about the reader’s pain points, how you can help with those pain points, and why you’re qualified to do so. Only one section is for your personal bio.

Sell yourself to your audience

Your About Me page is a chance to sell yourself to your audience.

You need to make sure that you’re coming across as someone who can help them with their problem.

You want to build trust with your reader so they will be more likely to follow your recommendations, buy your products, or take whatever other action you want them to take.

Think about it this way: If you’re a plumber and someone stumbles across your About Me page, they need to come away thinking that you are the best damn plumbing service in town. They should be thinking, “This is the only person I want to call when I have a plumbing problem.”

That's how to write an About Me page that makes people feel like that.

Speak like a friend

This page is about YOU.

So write in a way that sounds natural. Don’t be overly formal if that’s not usually how you talk and write.

Be real and authentic.

Your About Me page shouldn’t sound like it was written by an intelligent robot. Express some personality in there!

Write your About Us page in the first person

You should write your About Me page in the first person.

That means that I wouldn’t say “Becca started blogging in high school.” I would say “I started blogging in high school.” (The exception to this is if your site is really about a company, and not about you personally. In that case, the first person wouldn’t make sense).

But otherwise, you’re talking about yourself, so you should use the first person on your About Us page.

Don't be overly humble

Don’t be too modest.

If you have expertise and credentials in your topic, tell people!

People want to know why they should listen to you. So whether it’s the fact that you’ve been doing this for 12 years, or you have a degree in it, or you made $100,000 doing it last year, let people know that.

Now is not the time to be modest.

Now, be reasonable. Try to get inside the mindset of the reader. There’s a difference between talking about your expertise and bragging. But don’t leave out important credentials.

And of course, always be honest. If you don’t have amazing credentials on your topic, don’t pretend that you do. That is never a good idea.

Be honest about what your credentials are. If you’re still learning, you can say that.

As long as you’re one step ahead of your reader, you can help them.

Tell your readers a story

Your About Me page should tell a story about you.

And that story should be one that will help your reader in some way.

You don’t have to start from the very beginning. You can start with where you are now, and how you got there.

But make sure that your story is interesting, and helps the reader see how you can help them.

That's one of the keys of how to write an About Me page.

Identify your About Me page reader's pain points

Your first section (after the title of the page), should identify your reader’s pain points.

Why do people come to your blog? What problems are they looking to solve? What problems can you help them with?

Identify these things right upfront so that people will say “Wow, yeah, I do struggle with that!”

That’s the response you want.

You don’t need to list 20 things. Just a few is fine. Enough to show that you really “get” your reader.

Interview yourself

One of the best ways to come up with content for your About Me page is to interview yourself.

You can do this by sitting down and brainstorming a list of questions about yourself, your business, and what you do.

Then answer those questions in a way that is interesting and helpful to your reader.

What’s in it for your readers?

Make sure that your About Me page tells your readers what’s in it for THEM.

It’s not all about you! You want to make sure that people see how you can help them, and how you can make their life better.

So always keep that in mind as you’re writing your About Me page.

Position yourself as an authority

Make sure that you position yourself as an authority on your About Me page.

You want people to see you as an expert in your field, so that they will be more likely to listen to what you have to say.

There are a few ways that you can do this…

– Use strong language that positions you as an authority

– Use testimonials from people who see you as an authority

– Use social proof to show that you are an authority

These are just a few ideas. But the bottom line is that you want to make sure that you come across as an expert on your About Me page.

Your About Me page is a great place to include some internal links!

When talking about how to write an About Me page, I always say to link to some of your blog posts to show that you’ve got a lot to say on your topic.

If you’ve been featured in a big publication, or a podcast, or a summit…or anything else…link to that. Give people social proof of what you’re talking about.

(And internal links are always good for SEO).

This is obvious, but I’ve seen many typos out there.

One of the points of an About Me page is to show how professional you are and why you can totally help your reader. That message is undercut if you’ve got a bunch of typos everywhere.

So proofread it. More than once. Ideally, have someone else proofread it for you too, just to be sure.

Pro tip: Check out Grammarly. It's a Chrome extension that automatically proofread literally everything you write online and it makes it very easy to fix mistakes. I swear by it.

How to Write an About Me Page: Mistakes to Avoid in Your About Me Page

There’s no picture

Your About Me page on your blog should absolutely include at least one picture of you. Your reader wants to know who you are, and they can connect with you more if they can see your face.

I’m always surprised when I visit someone’s About Me page and there are no photos.

If you have the time and the funds to invest in a little photoshoot to get some nice professional pictures of you, you should do it. But if not, just pick a nice photo that’s not obviously from your college graduation or something like that.

The writing is boring

This is a common mistake. Your About Me page should be interesting! It’s the place where you can show your personality and why people should listen to you.

Don’t just list your credentials and expect people to be interested. They won’t be.

You never say what you do

This is another common mistake. Your About Me page should describe what you do. That’s why people are reading it! They want to know what you can do for them.

You talk about yourself in the third person

Don’t do this. It makes you sound like a pompous jerk.

You don’t consider your audience

When writing your About Me page, you should always consider your audience.

What do they want to know about you? What will make them trust you?

Make sure that everything on your about me page is relevant to them.

It rambles on and on

Your about me page should be concise. You don’t need to write a novel. Just hit the highlights and move on.

You make it all about you

While your about me page should be about you, it shouldn’t be all about you. Remember, your reader is looking for information about how you can help them.

An about me page is a great place to link out to your other relevant content.

When I talk about how to write an About Me page, for example, you should be able to click through and read more about that on my blog.

Make it easy for people to find more information about what you’re talking about.

What do they do next?

Do you want them to subscribe to your email list? Follow you on social media? Download one of your ebooks?

Make it clear what action you want them to take and make it easy for them to do it.
