1 – Your audience wants new content

Ideal scenario: Susie saw your blog post on Pinterest, clicked over, and now she's a fan. She's interested in your blog topic, and she likes your style.

Not-so-ideal scenario: Six months go by before you post again. Susie has now forgotten about you because you didn't know how to blog consistently.

1 – Set blogging goals

Whatever your goals are, make sure they're realistic and achievable. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up for failure.

And don't forget to track your progress so you can see how well you're doing. Keeping tabs on your blogging will help you stay motivated and on track.

2 – create a content calendar

A blog content calendar is the best way to manage your blog content and blog more consistently.

Without a guide to keep track of topics, deadlines, themes, and SEO keywords, you're basically just winging it. And if you want to know how to be consistent in writing for your blog, that, my friend, is not the way.

Without a plan (an actual, written plan), it's easy to miss nonexistent deadlines, and all of the sudden it's been 90 days since you posted.

3 – Pick a day of the week and stick to it

It's harder to blow off a blog post if it's Monday and Monday is “Blog Post Day.” It may seem silly, but having that thought in your brain really does help when you're trying to know how to blog consistently.

Following a weekly routine can help you “establish priorities, limit procrastination, keep track of goals, and even make you healthier . . . it lowers your reliance on willpower and motivation.”

Plus, if you have a day of the week for your blog posts, you can also have a day for your email newsletter, your social media posts, and however else you promote your posts.

4 – pick small tasks

If you're having a hard time getting going on a new post, break it down into small tasks. Your brain might not like the idea of having to sit down and write and research a 3,000 word post, make images, etc etc. So break it down.

Pick something small, like writing the introduction. Or creating the Pinterest image. Start from there, and it'll be easier to keep going.

You don't need to do the entire thing in one sitting. Break it up.

5 – Try the Pomodoro Technique

Ever heard of The Pomodoro Technique? You might like it.

Essentially it works by breaking larger tasks into smaller ones and giving yourself breaks.

A typical Pomodoro schedule looks something like this:

  1. Work for 25 minutes
  2. Take a 5 minute break
  3. Work for 25 minutes
  4. Take a 5 minute break
  5. Work for 25 minutes
  6. Take a 5 minute break
  7. Work for 25 minutes
  8. Take a longer, 15-30 minute break
  9. Repeat

And there are some rules:

"1. Break down complex projects. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller, actionable steps. Sticking to this rule will help ensure you make clear progress on your projects.

2. Small tasks go together. Any tasks that will take less than one Pomodoro should be combined with other simple tasks. For example, "write rent check," "set vet appointment," and "read Pomodoro article" could go together in one session.

3. Once a pomodoro is set, it must ring. The pomodoro is an indivisible unit of time and can not be broken, especially not to check incoming emails, team chats, or text messages. Any ideas, tasks, or requests that come up should be taken note of to come back to later. A digital task manager like Todoist is a great place for these, but pen and paper will do too."

6 – eliminate work distractions

Just do it. Close your other tabs. Put your phone into Do Not Disturb Mode. Close the door. Do what you need to do to keep distraction free.

Taking 30 seconds to check your Instagram messages is going to lead to a long strain of distracting activities. So just don't even start.

7 – don't let failures stop you

At some point, you're going to miss a week. Or maybe more than one. It's ok. But don't let it stop you.

It's easier to get yourself to do it when in your head you can say “I do this on Monday 100% of the time.” So once you skip one Monday, it's easy to skip two and then ten. Don't let it happen.

If you miss a week, get back up on the horse the very next week. Missing one week is not an excuse for missing two.

8 – create blog writing habits to stay consistent

If you want to know how to blog consistently, one of the best things you can do is create some blogging habits. That might mean setting aside time each day or week to write, or it could mean keeping a list of ideas so you're always prepared when it's time to sit down and write.

Whatever your approach is, make sure it works for you. Habits are only effective if they're something you can stick with in the long run. So find a system that works for you and stick with it.

Batching is an effective way to work because it allows you to get into a flow state and be productive for a sustained period of time. It also means that you don't have to spend time every day thinking about what you're going to write – you can just sit down and get started.

If you're not sure how to get started with batching, try setting aside a few hours on the weekend to write a few posts. You can also set aside time each week to brainstorm ideas, write outlines, or do any other tasks related to blogging. Then, when it's time to sit down and write, you'll already have everything you need.

10 – How to Blog Consistently? Make it a Priority

We all have other things in our lives. Some of them really important. I get it.

But if you what to know how to blog consistently…you've got to make it a priority. Now of course I'm not saying that it becomes above the health and wellbeing of you and your family. But it does come before binging Schitt's Creek for the 14th time (I feel your pain).

If it's the day of the week when I write blog posts and I don't have one done, it's got to be a priority.

No one is going to walk in one day and give you a 25th hour in the day. It's all about how you prioritize.

And pretty soon? It'll be natural.

11 – give up on perfectionism

One of the biggest obstacles when trying to learn how to be consistent in writing for your blog is perfectionism. We all want our posts to be perfect, but the truth is that they don't have to be. In fact, it's often better to just get your thoughts down and hit publish than to agonize over every word.

So if you're finding yourself getting bogged down in the editing process, try to let go of some of your perfectionist tendencies. Allow yourself to make mistakes and write imperfect posts. It'll make it a lot easier to keep up with your blogging goals.

How to blog consistently and stay accountable

One of the best ways to make sure you blog more consistently is to set yourself some goals and deadlines. Whether it's committing to writing a certain number of words each day or publishing a new post every week, setting specific targets will help you stay on track.
